MA in Migration and Global Development - its first year - Migrating out of Poverty members teaching on the course

This year for the first time, the School of Global Studies, at the University of Sussex is offering an MA in Migration and Global Development

Migrating out of Poverty team members are teaching on the course.

The new Migration and Global Development MA provides a distinctive and critical grounding in international development and migration studies. The course is designed to give students an advanced understanding of the complex relationship between migration and development. Students are offered research-led and evidence-based teaching that will discuss issues related to:

  • Migration-development nexus, including rural-urban and South-South migration;
  • Transnational migration and its developmental impacts;
  • Gender and migration;
  • Internal migration, poverty, and labour rights;
  • Environmental change and its effects on development and migration;
  • Humanitarian aid and refugees.

Priya Deshingkar is both the Reserach Director for Migrating out of Poverty, coordinated out of the University of Sussex, and also the theme leader for our Migration Industry projects. 

Dorte Thorsen is both the gender and qualitative research lead and the theme leader for our Generation and Gender projects.

Migrating out of Poverty has just confirmed a two-year extension, and will be working with partners at:

  • African Centre for Migration and Society @ Wits Univeristy, South Africa
  • Centre for Migration Studies @ University of Ghana
  • Organisation for Social Science Research in East and Southern Africa @ University of Addis Ababa
  • and the University of Assane-Seck at Ziguinchor, Senegal
